However, I hit a snag when I couldn't reattach the ribbon cable from the motherboard to the laser assembly in the disk drive.
this was my first time taking apart a PS2 so it was a little daunting (why couldn't this be as simple as replacing the battery in a Saturn!), but eventually I did manage to disassemble it and almost reassemble it. I had to take it apart to replace the CR2032. Hi PS2 Reddit! I am having some annoyances here working to fix one of my PS2s (a SCPH-50000), which I had bought online recently. None of my games have made it to the title screen.Īt this point I'm at a loss at what's wrong with it, is it the optical drive/laser itself? Is it the memory card reader? Or is it something else entirely? Would greatly appreciate some input on this topic Before, loading a disc would just cause the ps2 to freeze as soon as the screen went black, but now for some games it freezes after the ps2 logo shows, and for some after the first copyright image screen appears. The memory card issue was still there, but now the ps2 can partly read discs. Intent on fixing it I ordered a replacement ribbon cable for the disc drive on ebay and replaced it, figuring that would resolve the problems. Additionally there's this weird graphical glitch on the memory card icon, it looks like there's a bunch of spikes poking out of it, but the bottom line is that when you try to load it the screen freezes directly after the save data first icon loads.
I know for a fact that the memory cards are NOT corrupted as I tested this with my other ps2. Additionally, (and I can't remember if it was like this back then as well) for some reason, the ps2 can no longer read/load memory cards. It originally stopped working because my little brother was playing with the moving part of the optical disc drive, which caused the ribbon cable underneath if to tear, causing it to no longer read/load discs.
